The Tale of the Dybbuk Box: Cursed or Chaotic? | The Immortal Gazette

The dark, candle-lit room of The Immortal Gazette was as chaotic as usual. Alice lounged in her chair, twirling a dagger in her fingers with unnerving precision. Loki was stretched out on the couch, idly flipping through a book, while Rumplestiltskin paced back and forth, muttering to himself.

"So, Alice," Loki said, glancing over the top of his book, "What's next on the agenda?"

Alice smirked. "Well, darling, I was thinking we might dive into the tale of the Dybbuk Box."

Rumple froze mid-step, his eyes narrowing. "Oh no, not that thing. Are you seriously going to bring that up?"

Alice raised an eyebrow, a knowing glint in her eyes. "Oh, we must. It's a story that has everything—danger, curses, and just the right amount of chaos. I’m sure you’ll love it, Rumple."

Loki chuckled. "Ah, yes. The infamous Dybbuk Box. For those who don't know, it’s a wine cabinet, but not just any wine cabinet. This one is cursed—allegedly—and haunted by a vengeful spirit."

Rumple threw up his hands. "Haunted? Pah. It's nothing but an overblown tale meant to scare mortals into believing in things that go bump in the night. The real story behind the box is much more—"

"Mysterious?" Alice interrupted, grinning. "Rumple, darling, the real story is much more interesting than you give it credit for. You see, the Dybbuk Box has been around for centuries. It was created to house a dybbuk—a spirit of a malicious soul trapped inside an object. A very dangerous object, mind you."

Loki leaned forward, intrigued. "I take it this box was found by some poor mortal who had no idea what they were dealing with?"

Alice laughed softly. "Exactly. The box was first sold at an estate auction in 2001, and ever since then, it's been passed through a series of owners—each one meeting unfortunate fates."

Rumple rolled his eyes. "Oh, here we go, Alice. Another ghost story to get the mortals worked up."

Alice gave Rumple an unamused look. "This isn't just a ghost story, Rumple. It’s a curse—a very well-crafted one. I’ve seen the Dybbuk Box myself. There’s magic woven into it—dark, twisted magic. The spirit within the box feeds on fear, and it leaves a trail of misfortune behind it."

Loki looked at Alice, half-amused. "So, you’re saying it's not just a box. It's a petty spirit with a grudge?"

Alice's smile was sharp. "Oh, it's more than that, Loki. This spirit has a purpose. It seeks to possess and control its victim. It traps their soul in a way that's nearly impossible to escape from. A very nasty spirit, indeed."

Rumple scoffed. "And what? You think this is some elaborate hoax?"

Alice shrugged. "Who knows? Maybe the box is just a vessel for some cursed magic. Maybe it’s simply an ancient curse that’s been passed down through generations, feeding off the desperation and fear of its owners. The truth is, no one really knows."

Loki grinned. "I’m curious though... What would happen if someone opened the box?"

Alice leaned back in her chair, her eyes narrowing with intrigue. "Oh, they’d unleash the spirit inside. And from what I’ve seen, that spirit is not in the mood for company. People who've opened the box have experienced vivid nightmares, hallucinations, and even sudden bouts of illness. The Dybbuk doesn’t like to play games—it lives to cause pain."

Rumple crossed his arms. "And yet it still sits in the hands of mortals, waiting to be opened again. How charming."

Alice smiled. "I do love a good bit of chaos... especially when it involves something ancient and dark like this."

Loki glanced at Alice, a knowing look passing between them. "Well, it seems to me like you’re more than familiar with that kind of magic. Maybe you’ve got a little... fascination with it yourself."

Alice raised an eyebrow, her smile dangerously sweet. "Fascination, Loki? Maybe just a touch. I do like the things that go bump in the night... But I always prefer to be the one in control of it."

Rumple, clearly uncomfortable, rubbed his temples. "I swear, I’m surrounded by absolute chaos."

Alice chuckled darkly. "And that’s why we love you, Rumple. You know, if you ever find yourself near a Dybbuk Box, maybe you should just—"

"Stop right there!" Rumple interrupted, holding up his hands. "I will not get anywhere near that cursed thing, thank you very much!"

Alice smiled innocently. "Suit yourself. But remember, that box is still out there... waiting."

Loki grinned and stretched, clearly enjoying the show. "Seems like the Dybbuk Box is just another entertaining twist on ancient magic. Maybe I’ll visit it sometime—just to see how much havoc it can really cause."

Alice’s smirk deepened. "Careful, Loki. You might just be the one who unlocks its power next time."

And with that, the crew of The Immortal Gazette went back to their usual chaos, as rumors of the Dybbuk Box swirled through the air, leaving a lingering sense of unease—along with a whole lot of playful banter.
